Bob Sullins
Blacksburg Rotary Club
Bob Sullins was president of our Rotary club during 1979-1980 and was a charter member.
Bob was a Florida native who after graduating from Stetson University in 1959 served five years in the U.S. Army and returned to Florida where he earned his doctorate and began a career in higher education. In 1968 he moved to Virginia, serving as dean at Wytheville Community College and president at New River Community College before joining the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1976. While at NRCC Bob was president of the Pulaski Rotary Club and he enjoyed a much earlier connection with Rotary as he was founding president of the Wheel Club (now Interact Club) at Vero Beach High School.
Bob served in the U.S. Army Reserve in various roles in the 80th Infantry Training Division throughout his 20 years in Virginia and retired from the reserves as a Colonel in 1989 when he returned to Florida to serve as Vice President at St. Petersburg Junior College and later as Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of South Florida. Bob is married to Jo Sullins and they have four children and seven grand-children.
Bob worked with a number of committees in our club before serving as president devoted a good bit of time to recruiting members during his first years with the club. He recalls his time with the new club as an especially rewarding experience in the development of a new organization that serves the Blacksburg community so well! He added that “Perhaps the best part of Rotary for me has been the camaraderie with so many great friends from many walks of life.”
