Bob Rogers
Blacksburg Rotary Club

Bob Rogers was president of our Rotary club during 2004-2005 and was a charter member.  He was recruited by Bane Atkinson.

Bob was born in California in 1944 and grew up in Oregon, moving to Falls Church, Virginia, at age 12. He and his wife, Cosby, have one daughter and son-in-law and one granddaughter.  Bob is president of Architectural Alternatives, founded in 1987.

Bob graduated from Virginia Tech with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture.

Bob remained a member of our club for a dozen years, then dropped out due to business constraints, then re-joined about five years later and remained a member for another eight years or so.  He dropped out again in 2007.

Bob was president during the centennial year for Rotary International.  As part of that, our club took on the project of building Wong Park gazebo.  He and others, especially Tom Reid, then president-elect, also incurred the challenge of finding a new meeting location, as the Red Lion Inn gave notice of their closing.

Bob is a religious and principled person, vitally concerned for the well-being of the people and natural systems of the planet.  He dropped out due to a variety of reasons, including the long commute to the meeting site in Ellett Valley.  Philosophically, he feels the excessive use of resources required by weekly meetings outside of the town of Blacksburg, is something he didn’t want to contribute to.  He also feels that Rotary International has not adapted well to changing natural and societal environments and the role of service organizations in doing their part to find solutions.

He added, however, “The friendships and fellowship have always been terrific and difficult to give up.  If the meetings moved back to Blacksburg and were held bi-weekly, I’d rejoin in a heartbeat.”
